Timothy Gregory, professor emeritus with the Department of History, is widely known for his work studying Byzantine archaeology. His research has helped shed light on the dark age of the Roman and Byzantine world. Gregory has led significant excavations in central Greece, in particular in Isthmia. Isthmia is one of the four Panhellenic sanctuaries, active from the Archaic period through the end of Antiquity, with a rich period of medieval use as well. It is also home to a religious sanctuary dedicated to the Greek god Poseidon.
Gregory is the director of the OSU Excavations at Isthmia in Greece and has founded the Museum of Classical Archaeology at Ohio State. Additionally, he has published a wide array of monographs and single-authored and collaborative papers and articles.
