A sponsor is an external agency that provides funding for a project that might include research, training, or other sponsored research activity, which could be a grant, contract, subcontract/sub-award, cooperative agreement, memorandum of understanding, etc.

There are three broad types of sponsors; government (federal agencies, state agencies), non-profit (foundations, public service organizations) and for profit (corporate or industry).
