Milap C. Nahata, Pharmacy

Milap C. Nahata, MS, PharmD, is a distinguished leader in pediatric pharmacy, literally and figuratively writing the book on pediatric dosing of medications. He began his academic career in clinical pharmacy education, practice, research, and service at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy in 1977.

Nahata has published nearly 600 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and five books, almost exclusively on the topic of pediatric pharmacotherapy. One of his books, Pediatric Drug Formulations (now in its seventh edition), is the most widely used source in the field. Another book he wrote, Pediatric Pharmacotherapy, is the most comprehensive pharmacy textbook for the treatment of conditions of pediatric patients. He also established a fellowship program in pediatric pharmacotherapy, the first such program in the country focused on improving the outcomes of drug therapies in the vulnerable populations of infants and children suffering from acute and chronic conditions. Nahata was among the first four fulltime faculty members appointed in pharmacy practice at Ohio State and was the first clinical pharmacy practitioner at the Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Nahata is the only pharmacist to have received both the Sumner Yaffe Lifetime Achievement Award in Pediatric Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the Richard Helms Award for Sustained Contributions to Pediatric Pharmacy Practice from the national Pediatric Pharmacy Association. He is also the only pharmacist from the state of Ohio to be elected as a member of the Institute of Medicine, now the National Academy of Medicine; this is a highly prestigious recognition given for outstanding contributions to healthcare and for service to the profession.

He is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), research awards from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). He is a fellow of several national organizations and has presented numerous invited lectures in the United Stated and abroad. He has received the Distinguished Service Award from the AACP Pharmacy Practice Section and is the past president of both AACP and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP). Nahata has also been Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Pharmacotherapy, the first and highly respected clinical pharmacy journal worldwide, since 2006.

Nahata is the founding director of the Institute of Therapeutic Innovations and Outcomes at Ohio State where he is professor emeritus of pharmacy, pediatrics and internal medicine. He previously served as chair of the college’s Pharmacy Practice and Science Division, and as associate director of the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Department of Pharmacy from 1998-2013.
