Larry Smith is professor emeritus at The Ohio State University and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in the Animal Sciences Department specializing in mastitis.
Much of his research was based on a database that he helped build in the early 1980s of the lifetime intra-mammary infection history of OARDC research herds. The database made possible the discovery of the link between mastitis incidence in the herd and vitamin E and selenium deficiency.
Smith also collaborated with Ross Labs to evaluate the potential to provide passive immunization from diarrhea caused by rotavirus or E. coli. This particular collaboration developed a model to evaluate how well bovine antibodies could prevent diarrhea in humans.
Over a career of four decades, Smith authored more than 200 proceedings, papers and trade publication articles. He served as a leading industry speaker, and delivered more than 400 seminars and guest lectures during his career. Smith also won the National Mastitis Council Award of Excellence for Mastitis Prevention and Control.
