John Burnham (1929-2017) was professor of history at Ohio State from 1963-2002. He was an internationally-known historian for his work in the history of medicine, the history of psychiatry and psychoanalysis, and sociocultural history.
He is recognized as one of the first scholars to offer strong evidence of the influence of culture on science. During Burnham’s career, he published ten books, edited four more and wrote over 80 scholarly articles.
Burnham was a recipient of Ohio State’s Distinguished Scholar Award. He was a fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2009, the American Psychological Association presented him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his leadership in the history of psychology. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Association for the History of Medicine in 2014.
