Dwight M. DeLong, Entomology

Dwight DeLong (1892-1984) was a time two Ohio State alumnus and professor of entomology.

Along with Ohio State professors Donald Borror and Charles Triplehorn, he co-authored An Introduction to the Study of Insects, a must have reference book for entomologists. In addition, DeLong published more than 400 scientific papers on leafhoppers. Through his research, he discovered that male genitals were an important diagnostic, which become key to the systematics of leafhoppers at that time. His extensive leafhopper collection was donated to Ohio State’s Museum of Biological Diversity.

DeLong was the second person to receive Ohio State’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1962. He was a member of the Entomological Society of America and the Ohio Academy of Science and a fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
