DJI drone sanctions in 2020 and 2021

DJI drones were sanctioned under U.S. Commerce Department and U.S. Treasury Department regulations in 2020 and 2021.

It is now illegal for any person within the United States to:

  • Purchase any goods or services directly from SZ DJI Technology Co.
  • Export certain data to DJI’s servers in China

A violation of trade sanctions through interacting with SZ DJI Technology Co. could result in penalties. Exporting some types of data to DJI’s servers in China or purchasing maintenance service from DJI could result in a fine of up to $1,000,000 per violation.

DJI drones can still be used and are still being sold in the United States.

To avoid potential legal ramifications, Ohio State DJI drone owners and operators should avoid directly interacting with DJI for services or purchases, and contact the Office of Secure Research on process to change the drones’ default data settings.
