Berl R. Oakley, Microbiology

Berl Oakley, former professor of microbiology was a founding member of Ohio State’s Department of Molecular Genetics.

His discovery of γ-tubulin, a critical component in the construction of a cell, resulted in the key to understanding microtubule nucleation. The full significance of Oakley’s discovery continues to evolve today with implications for the greater understanding of human cancer.

Oakley received the 2003 University Distinguished Scholar Award at Ohio State, which seeks to recognize exceptional scholarly accomplishments by senior professors who have compiled a substantial body of research.
