Ann Hamilton, Art

test

Ann Hamilton, Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Art at Ohio State, is a contemporary artist internationally known for her large-scale multimedia installations, public projects, and performance collaborations.

For one of her best known works, indigo blue (1991), she collected 14,000 pounds of used, disassembled blue denim uniforms forming a massive pile originally installed in a former auto repair shop in Charleston, South Carolina. The piece is a reference to the plantation crop indigo and Charleston’s history as a center of the slave trade.

Hamilton’s works are held in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She has been the recipient of the Heinz Award, MacArthur Fellowship, United States Artists Fellowship, NEA Visual Arts Fellowship, Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture, and the Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship.
