2020 Innovator of the Year Finalists

The Early Career Innovator of the Year award recognizes Ohio State researchers who are early in their career actively working to promote commercialization of university intellectual property, through invention disclosures filed, patents applied for and/or received, technologies licensed or spin-off companies formed. Join us in congratulating the 2020 Early Career Innovator of the Year finalists.

Abraham Badu-Tawiah, PhD

Abraham Badu Tawiah

Associate Professor
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

Abraham Badu-Tawiah’s research is focused on the development of new mass spectrometry techniques for disease detection, and the studies of novel ion chemistry in charged micro-droplets. Badu-Tawiah is a recipient of Sloan Fellowship Award, NIH MIRA for New Investigators Award, ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Arthur F. Findeis Award, Eli Lilly Young Investigator Award in Analytical Chemistry, American Society for Mass Spectrometry Research Award and Department of Energy Early Career Award.

Badu-Tawiah obtained his PhD in chemistry from Purdue University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University.

Arnab Nandi, PhD

Arnab Nandi

Associate Professor
Department of Computer Science and Engineering

Arnab Nandi focuses his research on database systems, on large-scale data analytics and next-generation human-in-the-loop query interfaces. His work spans database systems, interactive visualization, human-computer interaction and information retrieval. Nandi is a recipient of the U.S. National Science Foundation’s CAREER Award, a Google Faculty Research Award and the IEEE TCDE Early Career Award for his contributions towards user-focused data interaction. He co-founded the OHI/O Hackathon and Informal Learning Program that hosts some of the region’s largest hackathons to foster a tech culture amongst students. He is also a co-founder of the STEAM Factory, an interdisciplinary network for research collaboration and dissemination. Most recently, Nandi co-founded Mobikit, an Ohio State technology commercialization spinoff company, based on his work in spatiotemporal data analytics.

Nandi received his PhD in computer science from the University of Michigan.

Shahid Nimjee, MD, PhD

Shahid Nimjee

Associate Professor
Department of Neurological Surgery

Shahid Nimjee holds appointments in the Department of Neurological Surgery, the Departments of Radiology and Neuroscience, and at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. His research focuses on exploiting the properties of RNA biology to better diagnose and treat thromboembolic disease as it pertains to cerebrovascular neurosurgery.  His dual training in open and endovascular neurosurgery allows him to focus on discovering an optimal treatment for each patient and finding new treatments for neurovascular disease that have had a positive impact on patient outcomes.

Nimjee received his MD and PhD from Duke University. He completed his fellowship in neuroendovascular and residency in neurological surgery at Duke University Medical Center.
