Laboratory Animal Elective

Program Description

Our 2-3 week program is designed to provide interested third and fourth year veterinary students a broad exposure to all facets of laboratory animal medicine and its various disciplines, including: research, management, clinical medicine, diagnostic services, husbandry practices and experimental surgery. This program works in conjunction with our well-established Laboratory Animal Residency Program.

The laboratory animal facilities at Ohio State encompass 14 separate buildings with >200,000 square feet of animal space. The range of species is extremely diverse, including mice, rats, farm animals, dogs, cats, non-human primates and various exotics.

Faculty Veterinarians and Special Expertise

Trainees are provided with a unique exposure to a diverse and vigorous research community.

  • six American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certified veterinarians

  • one American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM) board certified, agricultural clinical practice veterinarian

  • one research veterinarian

  • three laboratory animal veterinary residents

Educational Resources

Students will have access to on-site computers, laboratory animal texts, journals, CDs, manuals and additional digital resources through the University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) library.

Externship Responsibilities

  • participate in clinical rounds

  • assist physical exams, assessments, and develop differential diagnoses

  • work with veterinarians and researchers on clinical cases

  • attend rotations in medicine, operations, quality assurance, and experimental surgery

  • observe research laboratories

  • attend lab animal seminars and journal clubs

  • present information on assigned journal and diagnostic topics

  • participate in available handling/training labs

Student Schedule

  • 8 hours per day
  • 5 days per week

Housing

Assistance may be available through funding grants to cover all or part of required housing for out- of-state applicants. Inquiries should be made at the time of application.
