A new Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) policy has been enacted as a result of AAALAC International accreditation visit last year.
The new Multi-puncture Drug and Fluid Administration policy outlines the procedures that must be adhered to when using multi-use containers for injection, as well as standards that apply to injectable drugs. Simply put, the new policy will alter how research teams label and prepare fluids for injection. Researchers should review the full policy and implement these procedures as necessary.
The use of all injectable agents in animal research, teaching and testing, must adhere to the Use of Pharmaceutical and Nonpharmaceutical Grade Compounds in Animals and Labeling Expectations policy, updated by IACUC in February.
Appropriate handling of drugs is critical to performing sound research. The new policy provides guidelines that will help minimize the likelihood of contamination and ensure multi-use drug vials and fluid bags are managed in a way that maintains sterility and efficacy. Please contact the IACUC Office with questions about the policy.
