Disclosing Activities to NSF

NSF requires full disclosure of biographical and current and pending support, which includes foreign and domestic support and affiliations.

Biosketch

What to Disclose

Senior personnel are required to provide a Biosketch that includes:

  • professional preparation (e.g., educational degrees)
  • current academic, professional, or institutional appointments, paid or unpaid, and whether full-time, part-time or voluntary

When to Disclose

Biosketches are required to be submitted at the time of proposal.

Current and Pending Support

What to Disclose

  • all current and pending projects (including the project that is the subject of the application), regardless of whether support is provided through Ohio State, through another organization, or directly to the individual, and regardless of whether the project has monetary value
  • in-kind contributions not intended for use on the project/proposal being proposed that have an associated time commitment
  • current or pending participation in, or applications to, programs sponsored by foreign governments, instrumentalities or entities, including foreign-government sponsored talent recruitment programs (Disclosure placement may be contract dependent). As of May 20, 2024, individuals participating in a malign foreign talent recruitment program are not eligible to serve as a senior/key person on an NSF award
  • postdoctoral scholars, students, or visiting scholars who are supported by an external entity, whose research activities are not intended for use on the project/proposal being proposed and have an associated time commitment
  • consulting that involves research activities that falls outside of an individual’s appointment/agreement
  • travel supported/paid by an external entity to perform research activities with an associated time commitment
  • startup company based on non-Ohio State licensed IP
  • startup packages (other than startup packages provided by Ohio State)

Current and pending support must be signed, dated and certified to indicate it is true, complete, and accurate.

When to Disclose

Current and pending support must be disclosed to NSF with grant applications and updated on annual and final progress reports.

The university is required to notify NSF within 30 days of any support that should have been disclosed but was not disclosed. Investigators should immediately contact their Sponsored Program Officer (SPO) if they become aware of undisclosed support. The SPO will assist with proper NSF notification.

Facilities, Equipment and Other Resources

What to Disclose

  • in-kind contributions with an estimated value of $5,000 or more that support the research activity for use on the project/proposal being proposed. Include a letter of collaboration from each collaborator
  • current or pending participation in, or applications to, programs sponsored by foreign governments, instrumentalities or entities, including foreign government-sponsored talent recruitment programs (disclosure placement may be contract dependent)
  • postdoctoral scholars, students, or visiting scholars who are supported by an external entity, and whose research activities are intended for use on the project/proposal being proposed

When to Disclose

Facilities, equipment and other resources are disclosed at the time of proposal. 

International Activities (Cover Sheet)

What to Disclose

  • list the primary countries involved with any international activity described in the proposal, including research, training, and/or education carried out in cooperation with international counterparts either overseas or in the U.S. using virtual technologies
  • list the countr(ies) that project participants will engage with or travel to for international conferences

When to Disclose

International activities are disclosed on the cover sheet at the time of proposal.
