Program Description
The Cass Clerkship is a 12-week paid summer fellowship that is designed to provide students with broad exposure to laboratory animal medicine including clinical medicine, population health, facility operations/management, experimental surgery, protocol development/IACUC review, agricultural animal research / clinical medicine, and research. Students will spend dedicated time in each of the prior mentioned areas and have a variety of hands on and didactic experiences over the course of the summer. This program is targeted to first and second-year veterinary students looking to expand their knowledge of laboratory animal medicine as a career choice and works in conjunction with our laboratory animal residency program.
University Laboratory Animal Resources has nine centralized animal facilities (main campus) in addition to several off-campus facilities housing primarily livestock and aquatic species. The range of species is extremely diverse, including mice, rats, farm animals, dogs, cats, non-human primates and various exotics.

Externship Responsibilities
-
participate in clinical rounds
-
perform physical exams, assessments, and develop differential diagnoses

work with veterinarians and researchers on clinical cases

complete structured rotations in medicine, operations, quality assurance, and experimental surgery

participate in weekly resident seminars and journal clubs
-
participate in handling/training labs

complete a summer research project with a faculty mentor

How to Apply
The Cass Clerkship is only available to Ohio State students. Students will be selected based on the application packet in addition to an interview with preference given to students with strong academic qualifications and an expressed intent to pursue a career in laboratory animal medicine and/or research.
