Research Responsibilities and Compliance

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

A variety of research activities at The Ohio State University involve animals. The goals of these activities include improving the health care for animal species used as pets, evaluating new drug therapies, and understanding the mechanisms of diseases that afflict humans and animals. Extensive effort is made to provide excellent care for animals used in research, to gain the maximum amount of information from every animal used, and to minimize procedures that have potential for discomfort, distress, or pain.

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees the responsible use of animals in university research and instructional activities. The IACUC reviews protocols, reviews the animal care and use program, and monitors university animal facilities to ensure compliance with standards and regulatory requirements.

All research activities must conform to the statutes of the Animal Welfare Act and the guidelines of the Public Health Service Policy on Human Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

IACUC Meetings

All animal subject studies and study amendments are to be submitted via e-Protocol and must undergo online veterinary consultation and department review prior to IACUC review. This consultation and review may take up to a month’s time depending upon the complexity of the proposed research. Please submit documents as soon as possible to allow ample time for this process. Until studies have gone through the veterinary consultation and department review, they are not forwarded to the IACUC for review.

Principal Investigators should submit renewal studies three months prior to expiration to avoid a lapse in approval and suspension of research activities. This will allow time for the entire review process. A ULAR Protocol Consultant is available for assistance with protocol preparation: Angela Phillips at phillips.270@osu.edu.

Meeting Schedule

Studies which complete the veterinary consultation and department review are subsequently reviewed by the IACUC in the monthly meeting held virtually the third Friday of every month. All meeting dates are subject to change or cancellation.
