Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) is closing September 30, 2026. If your research uses MTurk for participant recruitment, data collection, or compensation, review the guidance and take the necessary steps to ensure a smooth study transition.

What This Means for Your Study

If your approved study involves MTurk, you need to plan for its discontinuation. Steps you should take include:

  • Notify participants: If participants are owed payment or are mid-study, create a plan to communicate the closure to ensure they receive outstanding compensation.
  • Submit a modification: If MTurk is named in your protocol and is the only platform approved to recruit, collect data, and pay participants, you will need to submit a modification to:
  • Update your protocol, recruitment materials, consent form, and related study documents to remove MTurk references
  • Describe how you will communicate the closure to current participants, and provide a copy of the notification
  • Propose a new recruitment/data collection method such as Prolific or similar

Note: You do not need to submit a modification if:

  • You have already finished all study activities, including MTurk payments; or
  • Your approved protocol already includes other recruitment, data collection, or payment platforms in addition to MTurk.
