Governor Strickland Announces Ohio's Centers of Excellence in Advanced Energy at Eight Universities
Governor Ted Strickland, together with Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut, announced Ohio's Centers of Excellence in advanced energy. The nine centers, located at eight universities throughout the state, are committed to focusing their academic and research activities on advanced energy development to strengthen Ohio as a global leader in the advanced enegy economy and to meet the requirements of Senate Bill 221, signed by the governor last year.
Centers for Innovation and Innovation Group Proposals Selected for Funding
The Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) and the Office of Research (OR) are pleased to announce the establishment of two Centers for Innovation and three Innovation Groups.
Ellen Mosley-Thompson Named Director of the Byrd Polar Research Center
Ellen Mosley-Thompson, an acclaimed polar scientist and University Distinguished Scholar in geography at Ohio State has been named the next director of the institution's Byrd Polar Research Center. Mosley-Thompson, who along with her husband and research partner Lonnie Thompson, is considered one of the world's leading experts on paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climates. Their work on ice cores retrieved from glaciers and ice caps on at least five continents has provided the clearest evidence to date of global climate change and the effects humans have had on it.
Caroline Whitacre, vice president for research at Ohio State, was recently inducted into the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s 2009 Volunteer Hall of Fame for Researchers. Whitacre, also a professor of Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics in the College of Medicine, was one of three researchers selected for this national honor in recognition of her outstanding volunteer support, for making a difference in the community and for advancing awareness of the Society’s mission to create a world free of multiple sclerosis. Whitacre has been on the forefront of multiple sclerosis research for more than 30 years.

Anne Moffat named Executive Director of the Office of Sponsored Programs
Anne Moffat has been named executive director of the Office of Sponsored Programs effective August 1, 2009. In her new role, Anne will provide oversight of the proposal submission process, as well as all pre-award and post-award administrative processes.

2010 Distinguished Scholar Awards
The Distinguished Scholar Award (DSA) program annually recognizes and honors six faculty members who demonstrate scholarly activity, research, or creative works which represent exceptional achievements in their fields. Distinguished scholars receive a $20,000 research grant and a $3,000 honorarium to pursue their scholarly activity.
Application deadline was Monday, October 19, 2009.
Stimulus Funding Update
On February 17th, 2009 President Obama signed The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Stimulus Bill). The bill supports a number of activities of importance to The Ohio State University, including significantly increased support for investigator-initiated research programs, as well as support for major instrumentation and research facilities. While general funding levels have been established, agency specific implementation plans are still in development. This site will provide the research community with additional information as it becomes available.
Noted Polar Scientist Named to the National Academy of Sciences
Ellen Moseley-Thompson, a world-class renowned expert in global climate change and its effects leading to the loss of the world's glaciers, has been named to the National Academy of Sciences.
Sharell Mikesell to Lead New Industry Liaison Office
In an effort to foster economic development opportunities within Ohio and beyond, the Office of Research is pleased to announce the opening of the Industry Liaison Office (ILO). The ILO will serve as the "gateway" to Ohio State innovation and expertise, connecting business and industry to Ohio State's vast network of resources - locally, nationally and internationally.
Serving as the hub for an exchange of information about new discoveries at the frontiers of science and technology, the ILO will help potential industry partners gain access to Ohio State's emerging technologies and ground-breaking research, state-of-the-art facilities and cutting-edge equipment and instrumentation, highly-qualified students looking for internship and employment opportunities, and training and education programs.
Sharell Mikesell, PhD has been named associate vice president directing the ILO. Since July 2005, Mikesell has served as the co-director for the Center for Multifunctional Polymer Nanomaterials and Devices (CMPND) centered at Ohio State. CMPND is Ohio's first state-funded multi-university center in nanotechnology funded by the Ohio Department of Development's Third Frontier Program.
