New faculty grant opportunities are available to develop research proposals, interactive course modules, and study abroad programs in the Gateway countries of China (including Hong Kong and Taiwan) India, and Brazil. Ohio State is currently exploring the feasibility of opening multifaceted centers in these locations to provide support for faculty teaching and research, study abroad programs, international students, university partnerships, and Ohio businesses. Applications are due Friday, February 26th, 2010.
The Gateway grants are supported by the Office of Research, the Office of Enrollment Services and Undergraduate Education, and the Office of International Affairs.
On February 17th, 2009 President Obama signed The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Stimulus Bill). The bill supports a number of activities of importance to The Ohio State University, including significantly increased support for investigator-initiated research programs, as well as support for major instrumentation and research facilities. While general funding levels have been established, agency specific implementation plans are still in development. This site will provide the research community with additional information as it becomes available.

Governor Strickland Announces Ohio's Centers of Excellence in Advanced Energy at Eight Universities
Governor Ted Strickland, together with Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut, announced Ohio's Centers of Excellence in advanced energy. The nine centers, located at eight universities throughout the state, are committed to focusing their academic and research activities on advanced energy development to strengthen Ohio as a global leader in the advanced enegy economy and to meet the requirements of Senate Bill 221, signed by the governor last year.

Ellen Mosley-Thompson Named Director of the Byrd Polar Research Center
Ellen Mosley-Thompson, an acclaimed polar scientist and University Distinguished Scholar in geography at Ohio State has been named the next director of the institution's Byrd Polar Research Center. Mosley-Thompson, who along with her husband and research partner Lonnie Thompson, is considered one of the world's leading experts on paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climates. Their work on ice cores retrieved from glaciers and ice caps on at least five continents has provided the clearest evidence to date of global climate change and the effects humans have had on it.
Caroline Whitacre, vice president for research at Ohio State, was recently inducted into the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s 2009 Volunteer Hall of Fame for Researchers. Whitacre, also a professor of Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics in the College of Medicine, was one of three researchers selected for this national honor in recognition of her outstanding volunteer support, for making a difference in the community and for advancing awareness of the Society’s mission to create a world free of multiple sclerosis. Whitacre has been on the forefront of multiple sclerosis research for more than 30 years.

Kei Koizumi, leading authority on the federal budget, federal support for research and development, science policy issues, and research and development (R&D) funding data gave a talk titled Federal Science Research and Development Priorities for 2010 & Beyond on September 23rd.

2010 Distinguished Scholar Awards
The Distinguished Scholar Award (DSA) program annually recognizes and honors six faculty members who demonstrate scholarly activity, research, or creative works which represent exceptional achievements in their fields. Distinguished scholars receive a $20,000 research grant and a $3,000 honorarium to pursue their scholarly activity.
