Coolest Science Story awarded to Food Science and Technology researcher

Xiaoying Zhao, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Food Science and Technology received the “Coolest Science Story” award for 2019.

Zhao and her team, including Yael Vodovotz, professor of food science and technology, and Katrina Cornish, professor of horticulture and crop science, developed a biodegradable plastic replacement with potential use to reduce waste in food packaging. The team received 4,584 of the more than 12,000 votes cast by Ohio State faculty, staff and students to take the top prize.

A trophy and $500 check were presented to Zhao on behalf of the university’s Office of Research by Jan Weisenberger, senior associate vice president for research.
