Biohazards in Research
Office of Responsible Research Practices
The Office of Responsible Research Practices (ORRP) provides administrative support to the university research community and the review boards responsible for research oversight. ORRP helps investigators obtain committee approvals to perform research involving recombinant DNA and biohazards and assists with the navigation of federal, state, and university regulations governing research in a way that fosters ethical conduct and ensures compliance, while minimizing administrative burdens. Assistance and oversight are provided during the preparation and submission of protocols and throughout the duration of the project. ORRP also supports the operations of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
Institutional Biosafety Committee
The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) reviews and approves all research conducted at Ohio State involving recombinant DNA molecules; biohazards; and microorganisms that are pathogenic to humans, plants, and animals. Working in conjunction with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, the IBC guides investigators through the acquisition, handling, transfer, and disposal of potentially hazardous or regulated biologic materials.
Office of Environmental Health and Safety
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) assists the university community in providing and maintaining a safe, healthful work environment for students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors. As part of its mission, EHS is responsible for protecting the local community and environment from potential hazards generated by university activities.
