Seed grants of up to $10,000 will be distributed by the Office of Research to individual faculty members or small groups of faculty beginning new research or creative projects in the arts and humanities. New research projects focused on curriculum or pedagogical issues and/or on multidisciplinary topics are welcome. Faculty members at all levels (assistant, associate, and full) from the College of the Arts and the College of Humanities are eligible, although assistant professors in the College of Humanities must have passed their fourth-year review before they are eligible to apply. Those funded by this program in the previous year are not eligible. Recipients from 2003-04 and 2004-05 must have filed their final reports with the Office of Research before applying again.
Proposals that have good prospects for future extramural funding are encouraged, but all important research and creative works are appropriate. Priority will be given to proposals for new projects that have the potential to make a significant contribution to the arts and humanities. Applicants should carefully explain the expected impact of the project when completed, including (where relevant) the influence it will have on current scholarship, the size and composition of audience it will be delivered to, the prestige of the venue in which it will be performed, the influence on curriculum or teaching, etc.
Funds may be used for the following:
- Materials, supplies and equipment
- Travel for research, presentation, or performance
- Undergraduate or graduate student stipends (tuition and fees are allowable expenses but it is encouraged that tuition and fees be supported by the departments or colleges)
- Faculty teaching replacement cost
Funds must be expended within 2 years from the date of the award and a final report will be due to the Office of Research within 3 months from the end of the 2-year award period. The final report should include a description of the objectives, success in completing the objectives, other accomplishments, impact to the relevant fields, and an expenditure report with three major headings (personnel, equipment, and other).
Proposals will be reviewed and ranked by a faculty panel composed of eight representatives, four from the Colleges of Arts and four from the College of Humanities. Funding decisions will be made by the office of the Senior Vice President for Research, The Executive Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Dean of the Arts, and the Dean of Humanities.
