Grants of up to $50,000 will be distributed by the Office of Research to advance innovative work by faculty in the arts and humanities. Multidisciplinary projects that include collaborators from more than one department or college are encouraged. The funds will be used to initiate new ventures and advance current successful projects to a new level. Funds can be used to support projects that include faculty outside the Colleges of the Arts and Humanities; however, the majority of the support will go to faculty in these colleges. Faculty who have been funded (as principal investigator) by the 2003-2004 Multidisciplinary Grant program or the 2004-2005 Innovation Grant program are eligible only if they have filed a final report on their project with the Office of Research and are now working on a new project. Faculty who were funded (as principal investigator) by this program last year are not eligible.

Projects that have good prospects for future extramural funding are encouraged, but important research and creative work where that is not likely will also be considered.

Proposals for the creation of centers, institutes, archives, or other on-going programs should present plans for sustaining and housing the endeavor beyond the grant period; in the case of creating new centers or institutes, the applicants must be able to show that the appropriate university procedures for establishing such a unit have been followed. Curriculum-related research and development, especially such work that has a multidisciplinary component, is welcome. In any case, proposals for projects that will make a significant contribution to the arts and humanities will be favored.

Proposals will be reviewed and ranked by a faculty panel composed of eight representatives, four from the College of Arts and four from the College of Humanities. Funding decisions will be made by the office of the Senior Vice President for Research and the Deans of the College of the Arts and the College of Humanities.

A significant contribution to the arts and humanities and one or more of the following outcomes is expected:

  • Greater distinction to the program and college through dissemination or presentation in significant venues or publications
  • Increased multidisciplinary activity
  • Significant improvement of a program and the creative/research profile of faculty members
  • Improved student/faculty interactions
  • Increased opportunity for external support

Funds may be used for the following:

  • Materials, supplies and equipment
  • Travel for research, presentation, or performance
  • Undergraduate or graduate student stipends (tuition and fees are allowable expenses but it is encouraged that tuition and fees be supported by the departments or colleges),
  • Faculty teaching replacement cost

Funds must be expended within 2 years from the date of the award. A final report will be due to the Office of Research within 3 months from the end of the 2-year award period. The final report should include a description of the objectives, success in completing the objectives, other accomplishments, and impact to the relevant fields, as well as an expenditure report with three major headings (personnel, equipment, and other).
