May 7, 2009

The newly formed ARC Steering Committee (Jean Huba, Social and Behavioral Sciences; Kathy Renick, Public Health; Jacqueline Rudolph, Medicine; Jennifer Lanter, Health Systems; Beth Haas, Office of Research; Joni Barnard, Office of Responsible Research Practices; Jeff Agnoli, Office of Research Training, Education, and Communication; Penny Donahue, Office of Research Training, Education, and Communication; Tom Ewing, Business and Finance; and Bob Killoren, Office of Research) decided to open up the spring quarter meeting to all Ohio State campus research administrators. Bob Killoren, associate vice president for research and executive director research foundation, welcomed ARC members and guests, introduced the ARC Steering Committee members, and facilitated a “Watch Out” activity that tested participants’ research administration knowledge. Caroline Whitacre, vice president for research, provided an update on new initiatives such as Centers for Innovation and Innovation Groups. Senior associate vice president for research, Janet Weisenberger, and deputy executive director of the Research Foundation, Anne Moffat followed with an update on federal stimulus funding. A break was then provided to allow participants to network with one another. Following the break, Dave Kieffer, associate director of the Office of Information Technology, presented information about the new eTravel system. The meeting concluded with an update from the Compliance and Accountability work group provided by Doug Rader, compliance officer at the Research Foundation.

Bob Killoren, associate vice president for research & executive director research foundation, provided a number of research administration related updates. The work groups then convened to review ongoing tasks and discuss new projects.


October 8, 2008

Caroline Whitacre, vice president for research, opened the meeting with a welcome message. Next, senior associate vice president for research, Janet Weisenberger, moderated a panel discussion comprised of the following individuals: Sebastian Knowles, associate dean for research, College of Humanities; Elizabeth Lenz, dean, College of Nursing; and Mary Ellen Wewers, associate dean for research, College of Public Health. Dr. Weisenberger and her fellow panel members shared their experiences with regard to sponsored programs administration. Anne Moffat, deputy executive director, Research Foundation, then provided an overview of cost sharing. This was followed by a brief update from the Roles and Responsibilities work group. Finally, there was a preview of the new Profiles in Research project, a series of videos highlighting various Ohio State researchers.


April 15, 2008

Bob Killoren, associate vice president for research & executive director research foundation, welcomed ARC members and provided a number of research administration related updates. Next, Tom Ewing and Phil Schirtzinger, ARC members from the Office of the Controller, provided an overview of facilities and administrative costs. Tom described about how rates are calculated, how F&A is distributed back to colleges, and answered questions. Sarah Starr, director of the Research Foundation’s Office of Funding & Development, followed with a presentation on customizing funding searches for colleges and researchers using the Community of Science (COS) database. Jeff Agnoli, from the Office of Research Training, Education, and Communication, then demonstrated the Carmen application. The meeting ended with ARC members dividing into work group huddles to continue their discussions on next steps from the previous meeting.


January 9, 2008

ARC members gathered together briefly and then broke into work groups to discuss the goals of each group, how to reach those goals, and next steps. Members then reconvened and a spokesperson from each work team provided a summary to the group-at-large.


October 30, 2007: ARC Inaugural Meeting

ARC LaunchPresident Gee helped launch ARC on October 30th. He praised the work of ARC members and spoke of research administrators' significant contributions in supporting the OSU research enterprise. President Gee stated, "I'm truly proud of who you are and I am honored to be a part of this institution and to be your colleague."
